Ask your U.S.Senators to Oppose Interchange Amendments (5/7/10)
Issue: Credit and Debit Card Payment System.
Each time you use your debit or credit card, a merchant is paid immediately and the credit union that issues your card receives "interchange" through the card payment system. The interchange reflects the merchant's fair share of the costs of this convenient and beneficial payment system. At your credit union, interchange supports everything from re-issuing cards compromised by merchant data breaches to providing a call center to contact if your card is lost or stolen. In the coming days, the U.S> Senate will debate S. 3217, the Restoring American Financial Stability Act and a number of amendments have been offered which would make changes to the card payment system. These amendments would be harmful to credit unions and consumers alike. They threaten credit unions' ability to offer debit and credit cards to their members and would allow merchants to interfere with consumers choice by arbitrarily varying the terms of card acceptance. These changes could enable credit unions service to their members.
Please send a message to both of your Senators TODAY urging them to oppose any amendments to S3217 which would affect debit and credit card-issuing credit unions and the card payment system. Fraudulent Text Messages & E-Mails:
Please be aware that many consumers of financial institutions are receiving fraudulent text messages and e-mails. Ensuring your privacy and protection is our priority and we would NEVER ask you to reveal your personal account information. If you are unsure of the origin of any communication or if you have supplied anyone with your account information, please ask to speak to a Member Account Representative.
Check Cashing Scam - Stranger Beware:
OUR Credit Union has worked hard to protect your money. However fraud continues to grow. The most recent cases involves young people cashing checks for someone they don't know. If you are approached by someone asking you to cash their check, PLEASE DON'T! If you do not know the person don't cash the check for them. Financial institutions are seeing a growing number of these cases in which the checks are no good. The person cashing the check could be held liable and prosecuted.
